Located in southern Bulgaria, this private garden develops a calm indoor–outdoor experience, aligned with the scale of the property and the way it is used. The landscape works with broad planting masses, clear circulation zones, and more intimate areas for staying, forming a sequence of spaces with privacy, depth, and seasonal character.

02

Design Concept

The garden is organized as a sequence of spaces with different character, aligned with the scale of the property.

Two distinct approaches are used - a more formal expression in the front and a freer, more relaxed one in the depth of the site.

The space unfolds gradually between them, with a smooth transition and a consistent overall composition.

02

Spatial Structure

The diagram traces the main spatial logic of the site.

The house is set within a wider open zone, from which the garden gradually transitions to a front lawn, pool area, children’s space, and quieter northern areas for retreat.

The guest house is positioned as a separate peripheral zone.

The main focus of the composition is the summer living area with the pool, after which the design shifts into calmer parts of the landscape.

03

Design Approach

The design is aligned with the scale of the property and the way it is used. The garden is organized as a sequence of spaces with distinct character.

Accents are limited and deliberately placed. They are not repeated, but mark specific points and create depth.

The zones are arranged to support different modes of use - from more active to more intimate, without abrupt separation.

Spaces reveal themselves gradually, offering choice without competing with one another.

04

Plantings

Plants form the basis of the concept and defines the character of the space. Species are used to build clear volumes and depth, rather than for decorative fill.

The selection responds to the warm, dry climate. Resilient species are used to retain structure under strong sun and limited moisture, with denser planting in areas supported by irrigation.

Accents are clearly defined - Japanese maples, olives, cypresses, evergreen magnolia, along with shaped topiary and bonsai.

The rockery is conceived as a drought-tolerant garden with a more natural character, structured through stone and lower, adaptive species.

Trees are used as the primary tool for building volume in the garden. A larger number of trees is arranged to create layers and depth.

The approach considers not only foliage and canopy form, but also qualities such as flowering, fruit, and cones, introducing seasonal change and a richer experience over time

05

Architectural Elements

Architectural elements are developed as part of the overall environment, rather than as additions.

Benches and lighting are custom-designed for the project, combining wood and stone to integrate naturally with the overall character.

06

Pavings

The approach to path design is restrained - they are present without dominating, contributing to the overall coherence of the space. Materials include wood, stone, gneiss, and gravel, combined to unify the different zones into a continuous system.

The development of this project was both a challenge and a pleasure for the team. The scale allowed us to think in terms of the whole, while the detail enabled control over how the space is experienced and used
